Proverbs 31 Challenge Day 1: Wisdom, Instruction & Self-Discipline

Wisdom. Instruction. Self-Discipline. The flesh can be so weak at times but with God’s strength we know we can do all that the Lord has out for us to do. Why in the world can it be so difficult to be obedient? We know what to do but accomplishing it can seem far fetched and even burdensome. The first chapter of Proverbs highlights the actions and results of applying wisdom versus making decisions in the flesh. Proverbs 1:7 explains how wisdom comes from the respectful fear of God and that it must be accompanied with instruction and self-discipline! The reason why wisdom may be difficult to follow is that there is a lack of instruction and discipline to hold it all together. Wisdom: Actual instruction from God. Instruction: Practical steps to accomplish. Self-Discipline: Will power to apply wisdom and instruction. Wisdom and step by step instruction can be received by God but not having the self-discipline to carry it out may be the very root of inconsistency and lack of completion.

The initial thoughts of the Proverbs 31 woman note her as excellent, virtuous and spiritual which hold her value and worth more than rubies and pearls. (verse 10)

The chapter ends praising her due to her fear of the LORD [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect] (verse 30). She understands that her relationship with God and the application of His wisdom is key in managing her household, having a successful marriage and leading multiple business ventures. Wisdom is the connecting piece that allows us to partner with God in all that we do. As we embark on this 31 day challenge, I encourage you to ask the Lord to strengthen your level of self-discipline as you receive wisdom and instruction. Self-discipline is crucial as the Lord may lay items on your heart to accomplish certain goals within this challenge. When wisdom is received put the practical instruction into action and be disciplined to carry it out.

This is the key to true obedience.

An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous],

who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and

her worth is far above rubies or pearls.

Proverbs 31:10

Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord

[reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect],

she shall be praised.
