We hear often that believers are to be the light in dark places but what does that really mean? “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 At night while driving you expect your car’s headlights to help guide you to your destination. The lights are consistent and in very dark spaces the high beams illuminate the area even more so to keep you safe from things not easily seen from the naked eye. If vehicles did not have their lights on at night, vehicles would crash into each other, buildings, etc. It would be complete chaos!
As believers, like vehicles, our light of hope, joy, restoration and faith not only bring consistency to the world but stability. We bring truth to the world unseen by their limited perspective.
Believers diffuse radical, anti-Christ thinking shedding light on truth through our actions, conversation and behavior. In this manner, what we say, how we say it and how we act matter and have eternal reward or consequence.
As such, all that we do - career, personal and home life - should mimic the illumination of Christ. Although worldly persuasion may exist, we are not to blend in with society's ways of life or thinking but ground ourselves in the Word of God. Instead of hyping up a worldly conversation diffuse it with wisdom and discernment of the Lord.
The world is watching what we do and how we do it even if they never comment.
Never think you are in this alone. Staying connected to brothers and sisters in Christ will encourage and signal you to keep your light shining bright if it ever goes dim. These are the checks and balances of accountability in the kingdom.
